A Spoonful of Ego

Hello again. Address: http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newCDV_74.htm

Yep. Now, this article is entitled Egos at Work, and obviously will tell the reader how to deal with people with a superiority complex in their work/school environment. All of us know someone with a superiority complex…yes that WOULD mean that they find themselves more intelligent, more important, more…insightful…than those around them. I know quite a few people with this complex.

On one side of things, I guess you could say that the person has worked hard to achieve their status. They may deserve some sort of respect that they don’t feel they are getting, and therefore they impose their insecurity onto other people. They may feel that they need others to recognize any accomplishments they have made. Frequently, they belittle the ideas and opinions of others to make others feel as inferior as they want them to feel.
Some common characteristics of a person with a superiority complex are:

  • Dominating conversations and meetings.
  • Reminding others of their superiority or excellence (real or perceived).
  • Stopping others from expressing their ideas.
  • Rewarding those who support them (and perhaps punishing those who don't).
  • Bullying, or trying to exert power they don't really have.

If you truly think about it, we all know at least one person who does this. This person may be a sibling, a teacher, a boss, and friend, a coworker, or just another student. This person may constantly tell you how much they know. Perhaps they will criticize everything you do, or consider themselves far too advanced to keep company with you.

There is a way to deal with egotistical people. Always keeping calm in discussions and being sure to not let the person ahead of you in any argument (usually by remaining calm and confident) is the best way to be sure that they aren’t having a negative effect on you. Of course, ego usually isn’t curbed by one person, so maybe it isn’t worth trying. Yeah…sucks. Perhaps you lose friends because of their superiority complex. Perhaps separations due to one person being completely self-absorbed can become evident. Whatever the situation is, you can only deal with it to your best ability and then let it be. Live and let live.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.

It wouldn't be me if I didn't have something to say on the election. Especially given the fact that the candidate I have supported since he announced he was a Democratic candidate long long ago (alright, Sophmore year..still) has officially been name President Elect Barack Obama. Score.
Oh, yeah. The address. Here you are: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/us/politics/09memo.html?hp

Soooo. Remember all the OBAMA IS A TERRORIST and HE IS GOING TO TEAR DOWN THE ECONOMIC SYSTEM OF AMERICA junk we've heard a lot of lately? Yeah scratch that. Apparently these fear tactics used by politicians that sunk into the hearts of Americans really aren't important right now. Not to say that many don't believe it, because they do (cough cough Brandi), but right now all those who promoted the opinions are now quite behind the president elect.
For example, Michele Bachmann of Minnesota told Chris Matthews of MSNBC that, when it came to Mr. Obama, “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views.”
But there she was on Wednesday, saying she was “extremely grateful that we have an African-American who has won this year.” Ms. Bachmann, a Republican, called Mr. Obama’s victory “a tremendous signal we sent.”
Ha. Wow, lady.
And don't forget leading lady Sarah Palin herself making quite a few comments that she now seems to put behind her. Her comment on Obama hanging around terrorists seems to be nonexistent as she speaks of Obama's victory.
"Let him be able to kind of savor this moment, one, and not let the pettiness of maybe internal workings of the campaign erode any of the recognition of this historic moment that we’re in. And God bless Barack Obama and his beautiful family."
Thank you, Sarah Palin.
Can I say at least she isn't a terribly sore loser? Ha. Okay I'm done. Sorry for the personal attack, Lyndsay. I know you are Sarah Palin's counterpart.

Even Bush hailed Obama's victory. That's a shocker.
Alright anyways...
Let me just say that I am of course happy with the results. Many Democrats wanted a Dem. majority in the house, but I tend to disagree with a one party majority EVER again after the Republican majority killed us practically...you get the picture.
It's time to quit bickering over who is better and what separates us from them. Seriously. Let me close here with a quote from Joe Lieberman...

“It’s over, and it’s genuinely time to find unity and move forward behind the new president.”

Thank you, Joe. =]
So here we begin the era of Mr. Barack Obama.
If America was right OR if we drank the kool-aid we won't know for a while. So let's attempt some type of unity for some amount of time. It couldn't hurt.
